5 Link Feature LIVE on Insta… FINALLY

Finally! Instagram has listened to its 1 billion-plus active daily users and has implemented the long-awaited feature of being able to add up to 5 links to a profile’s bio.

So what does this mean? Well, it enables users to drive more direct traffic, by adding in the specific links that content creators or users would like to share with their followers,  without the use of external companies, such as LinkTree (who will no doubt see a drop in subscribers to their service).

Here is what Instagram had to say about their latest update, which they have had in testing since 2021.

“ The update will make it easier for creators and other users to highlight their passions, bring awareness to causes they care about, promote brands they love, showcase their personal business, and more.”

It is easy to use, simply head to ‘Edit Profile’, move down to ‘Links’ then ‘Add external Link’. It is fully customisable where you can add in the link you would like your followers to discover, and also give it a title. It also allows you to change the order of your links by dragging and dropping them.

This can be utilised for cross-promotion between other brands and companies, or directing followers to specific pages of your website, like a sale for example. You can even add a link to direct followers to competing social platforms, like TikTok or YouTube. As long as the link abides by the community guidelines and Terms of Service, the link can be added. The links are scanned to ensure they meet the standards agreed upon.

When a link is clicked on it simply opens within the Instagram app, not opening in a separate browser window. Should you wish to open the page in your built-in browser, you can do so by tapping on the three dot menu at the top of the page by selecting ‘open in system browser’.

Unlike Tik Tok, this feature within Instagram is not only available to business accounts, it can be utilised by any account.

So, go on and spread awareness about other brands or causes you are passionate about, or direct users to a specific page on your website. It’s seamless and something that even Mark Zuckerberg admits is “probably one of the most requested features we’ve had.”
